As an artist, I find that I have been a tight, restricted painter. Typically, bound to vertical and horizontal lines and the squares and rectangles their intersections create. Inspired by the De Stijl movement and architecture of the 1920’s, I have always been in awe of artists who appeared so natural in their mark-making and loose painting styles. In addition, I found myself being intimidated in making the kind of energetic and gestural marks that more recent modern and contemporary painters have and do.
When the Safer-At-Home order was issued in March of 2020, I found myself with extra time on my hands and the inner yearning to make new works nagging at me. I began to consume works by Laura Horn, Andrea Soos, Carolina Della Valle, and Heather Day; studying their instinctual marks and layers of paint and became excited to begin a new direction in my own mark making experiences.
